Diffusional water permeability of human erythrocytes and their ghosts
The diffusional water permeability of human red cells and ghosts was determined by measuring the rate of tracer efflux by means of an improved version of the continuous flow tube method, having a time resolution of 2-3 ms. At 25 degrees C, the permeability was 2.4 x 10(3) and 2.9 x 10(3) cm s-1 for red cells and ghosts, respectively. Permeability was affected by neither a change in pH from 5.5 ...
متن کاملSuppression of red cell diffusional water permeability by lipophilic solutes.
The inhibitory effect of a series of neutral lipophilic solutes (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, n-butanol, iso-amylalcohol, n-hexanol, diethylether, nitrobenzene, and pyridine) on the diffusional water permeability (Pd, tot) of bovine erythrocyte membrane at 25 degrees C was studied in comparison to that of p-chloromercuri benzoate (pCMB). Permeability data were obtained by measur...
متن کاملDiffusional permeability of rabbit mesothelium.
Diffusional permeability (P) to sucrose (Psuc) and Na+ (PNa+) was determined in specimens of rabbit sternal parietal pericardium, which may be obtained without stripping. Specimens were mounted in an Ussing apparatus with 3H-labeled sucrose and 22Na+ in a luminal (L) or interstitial (I) chamber. Psuc was 2.16 +/- 0.44 for L-->I and 2.63 +/- 0.45 (SE) x 10(-5) cm/s for I-->L, i.e., approximately...
متن کاملStudies on the permeability to water of selected marine, freshwater and euryhaline teleosts.
Recent studies of the fluxes of sodium and chloride across euryhaline teleost fish have shown that acclimation to fresh water involves a sharp reduction in the flux of both ions (Evans, 1967 c, 1969; Motais, 1967; Maetz et al. 1967 a, b; Potts & Evans, 1967; Ports et al. 1967). It has been shown, at least in Fundulus heteroclitus (Potts & Evans, 1967), Tilapia mossambica (Potts et al. 1967), Xi...
متن کاملMarine pollution detection through biomarkers in marine bivalves
Indian coastal waters are subjected to considerable pressure from sewage and industrial wastes, which are responsible for the contamination of the waters with consequent loss in biodiversity. Monitoring methods adopted so far have helped in documenting the level of contaminants in water, sediments and biota, but not the interaction of these pollutants with living organisms. Exposure of animals ...
